It is possible to make original recordings in DSD though. Vinyl could be archived in DSD. See, as an example,:you can use a good sound card or A/D converter to record the analog which in theory should be superior to the 16/44.1 ripped CD. I have done this with 85 SACD's that I owned when I switch to a PC based server.

You don't loose much. I think it is worth the trouble for improved quality over ripping the CD layer. On the other hand, in the last few years the difference between a very good CD and SACD on a good player has narrowed so it is debatable as to whether making a copy from the analog is worth the trouble.
It is also debatable whether the extra cost of a SACD is worth the trouble given recent recent improvements in redbook. In order to play the SQUARE you buy a SQUARE player. SACD is a TRIANGLE, so in order to play SACD. You guess it a TRIANGLE player! Developing software based on TRIANGLE hardware to be used on a SQUARE player. Sony isn't about to let the genie out of the bottle again!

I thought it was only a redbook player. You can rip sacd's to pc's using the analog in to capture the sound as 6 wav channels then encoding those into dts. This concept would be no difference than ripping a LP.How ironic that Sony used an impossible encryption on SACD (which, let's face it, didn't set the world on fire),The SACD was developed at a time the big record companies were going through a shock, as the ease the Audio CDs could be copied was damaging their higly profitable album sales business model. And since CDs could not be copy protected, they needed a new format that could be copy protected, and they needed it now.So, when the record companies heard that Sony was making a new audio format, the said to Sony something to the tune of 'lock the content inside the disc and never let it out, or else you won't to see any releases on this new format. We don't want to have the CD debacle repeated again'.
Also, don't forget that Sony owns Sony BMG, a major supporter of DRM-everywhere.Thus, SACD was designed from day 1 to be impenetrable, and that's the reason for the impossible encryption. Sony also banned the making of PC drives. This serves two purposes: First, it prevented the creation of ripping programs. Secondly, it cancelled the existense of software players (like WinDVD).

No record companies going through a shock. Also, most formats back then were not copy protected (DAT, VHS, laserdisc etc), so the idea of a protected format was pretty much science fiction back then. Simply, there was too little incentive to put copy protection on Audio CDs.By the time napster/torrent/CD recorders appeared, it was too late.
CD players were everywhere, so you just couldn't break compatibility with all this huge installed base to put copy protection in them. So, the record companies kept their CD line of products rolling, hoping that the public would soon jump to the copy protected SACD for the higher quality, and CDs would be gradually phased out of the market. Just like DVD displaced VHS for the movie industry (however, I don't know if it would have if it was as heavily protected as sacd and no pc drives existed). But in the case of CD vs SACD, the public prefered good ol' CDs and passed on the SACD. It will not even convert dts MA or Dolby THD.Interesting - I have read on another forum where this Monoprice box does work sending SACD converted to PCM 88.2/24 via HDMI via an Oppo BDP-83. I'm the author of a program called 'SACD-Ripper' just google for it and you'll find all the necessary information. Although the program is still in alpha it allows you to dump DSDIFF (both DST & DSD), DSF (DSD) and a raw ISO which can be burned using ImgBurn, Nero, etc. And can be played on several SACD players too (a list is being made, as we speak.).Cheers! The first two generations of the PS3 are able to play SACDs and use software internally to convert DSD to PCM. I've taken advantage of this (now that the PS3 has been hacked) and I've reversed this particular process to make DSD ripping possible.As I cannot post any external links here, you will have to google for more information. When I bought the Oppo 105D player, I was already streaming DVD videos via other devices (AppleTV/iTunes, Roku, Amazon, Verizon on-demand, etc) and I also had all my digital music in a NAS.My plan was to use the Oppo to play Blu-Ray discs and for playing SACDs both 2-channel and multi-channel.With more and more providers starting to stream 4K, then Blu-Ray will likely become old stuff very soon.
Today, the ONLY reason for me to keep a disc player like the Oppo is for multi-channel SACD.DVD/BR/transports are rapidly becoming obsolete. I sat down tonight and opened my new OPPO 103. Connected it to my TV so I could set up the WIFI and configure it as instructed on CA. Then I moved it to where my Win 10 PC and Router are. The OPPO is only plugged in and is connected to my Network by WiFi.After a few missteps, I was able to start archiving my SACDS.
Key point for me was that I had to create an empty folder named 'AutoScript' on my FAT32 formatted USB thumb drive. Then I extracted the AutoScript folder I downloaded from CA into that folder.The entire process of archiving, converting to DSF and storing on my NAS takes about 15 to 20 minutes per SACD. Well I like spinning disks, and I have no issues with those wanting to archive their bought disks. Unfortunately far to many use these type of methods to copy and distribute illegal music. With this said I personally believe that with how strict Sony has been on not allowing ripping of SA-CD disks they will probably come down on this pretty hard. I would be excessively surprised if their legal department is not already 'talking' to Oppo about patching this firmware very quickly.Randy:While I totally agree that there is potential for abuse here, I respectfully pose that the membership of this forum, while not 'perfect' in any sense of the word, is indeed very respectful of the legal aspects of copying software. We are a bit more mature about these things and we are more likely to speak out against pirating than secretly participate in it.
But I am not totally naive either.I have a music server (Silenzio) in my home as my main source for music distribution. I rip CD's and SACD's so that I can have everything on my server for easy access.
I'm willing to guess (and absolutely know in most cases) that this is why we are excited to be able to rip our own SACD's.I'm not sure Oppo will do anything about this unless Sony forces them too. And let's face it, the SACD as an audio medium isn't setting the world on fire. The whole idea of piracy as far as SACD's go is probably quite small. I download way more 24bit files which would be quite easy to transfer/share with others.

And I agree that most honest adults, especially those that frequent forums such as this realize how important it is to support artists. And I have always believed that archiving purchased media is a right.I actually have been enjoying spinning disks since getting the Marantz. I just picked up a Remedy and I am enjoying playing old Rebooks again, which I did not enjoy narrowly as much even when ripped to my server:). I finished ripping all my SACDs.
Here are a few things that I noticed:1. The metadata from the CD layer and that from the SACD layer can be different!2.
On releases that have 2 discs, one can find four different metadata! 2 for the CD layers and 2 for the SACD layers.For example, one disc shows the name of the album as: 'Mahler Symphony No. 8' and the other disc uses 'Chicago Symphony Orchestra: Mahler Symphony No. Another example: One disc shows the name of the movements in one language (English) and the other disc in another (German).And, of course, a common problem is using the name of the composer and the artist interchangeably.In other words for classical CDs in particular, the metadata is ALL OVER THE PLACE.I use MP3TAG to fix the metadata and highly recommend it. Bottom line: check and fix the metadata before storing the folder/file in your NAS!! 1: On Iso2dsd, under the options column on the left side, do I want to check the 'Convert DST to DSD'?Doesn't matter. You will get the same ISO either way.2: When I have an Iso file, I can not seem to open it.
MC21 should just play it without any adjustments unless your system cannot handle DSD. Try dragging it into the 'Playing Now' window and choose 'Add to playing now'; you should see all the component tracks listed and playable.I am not sure how to edit the tags prior to importing to the my NAS?You cannot. Put it on the NAS and edit the tags in MC21.And I am trying to use a wine version of Mp3tag with little success.
Is anyone using another metadata program on OSX with luck?No idea. Most taggers cannot handle ISOs.
A couple of questions for those way more knowledgeable. I am using a Mac Book Pro, an Oppo 103 and I use JRiver 21 via Silenzio. 1: On Iso2dsd, under the options column on the left side, do I want to check the 'Convert DST to DSD'? 2: When I have an Iso file, I can not seem to open it. I am not sure how to edit the tags prior to importing to the my NAS? And I am trying to use a wine version of Mp3tag with little success.

Use the DSF for all playback as you can fix the meta errors and have track-by-track speed (some systems may experience some lag while software sniffs through a 2-3gb ISO file for your particular track).MP3Tag works great, or you can just do the tags in JRiver once imported under the Audio-File view (easiest way to drag-select and such). Hey Kal, I understand the loss of having the.iso as an archive but not your comment on it taking up more space. Can you explain that? Are you saying the.dsf output from the direct method is a bigger file than creating the.dsf from the.iso? CraigIn my limited experience, the.iso file and the.dsf files are very similar in size. They are usually with in 50 mb's of each other.
Given the cost of storage space, this seems like a non-issue. But, as usual, maybe I'm missing something. Just ask my wife.:confused-2.
Ah, and you are suggesting simply creating AND streaming the.isos then? I guess it depends for me on how often I listen to MCH versions of my music. These days, and this has changed over the last two years, I'm listening to 90% 2 channel. I have the ISO's to play MCH over JRiver if I want to listen to some great MCH every once in a while (Beck's Sea Change, Roxy Music Avalon are a couple faves). With the bulk of listening being 2 channel for me, I tend to just extract the 2ch layer to DSF and put that on my NAS. The ISO's are on my NAS in an 'unwatched' folder for those rare occasions that I want to listen to them. I guess it depends for me on how often I listen to MCH versions of my music.

I have no need for multichannel right now and do as you do, store the.isos in a NAS folder that JRiver does not monitor. As my archive grows however, that is starting to become a sizable duplication.
